Addams (1860-1935), American social reformer and pacifist, founder of Hull House in 1889, after studying settlement work in Europe during her convalescence known for her unceasing recruitment efforts for her own institutions (chiefly among women) and for her opposition to war in any form (particularly in the last 20 years of her life).
